What a Difference a Door Makes!

Front door makeovers

Ok, I have a decorating pet peeve. Front doors. Let’s face it, the entry is the first place your decorating style is showcased, and it is a main contributor to your curb appeal as well. So many people just accept a cheesy front door picked by their builder, or the former owner, and don’t stop to consider how much it contributes to the overall feel of your home. And it counts even more with small homes, because we have less opportunity to make our home shine! So pull out the paintbrush and have a front door makeover day! Can’t you just see a holiday wreath on some of these front doors? This isn’t hard, and it’s a detail you shouldn’t ignore… if you want proof, check out the before and afters at the end of this post!

Stenciling your house numbers or street name is a great way to update a boring door… Or use vinyl lettering for a covered entry!

  1. Hello,
I enjoyed looking at your door makeovers. I am very much in need of one. My problem is I don’t know what color to use. I have a brown brick ranch home and my front door (also shutters and garage doors) are white. They have been white for the 24 years that I have lived here. I want to change it up but am stalled on color. Any ideas or suggestions???
    Thanks for your time.
    Lynn

    • Kathy Woodard says:

You could do basically any warm color to coordinate with the brown of the brick. I would use color that is not too dark or too light…. You want some contrast with the brown brick, but not so much that it is a stark difference like the white that you have right now. Remember to think outside the box, it doesn’t have to be brown taupe or white. Depending on how dark your brick is, a black or charcoal grey door could update the whole look of your home!

    • Hi Lynn,
This is a suggestion I read recently for walls. I think it would work just as well for doors. Get a few paint color samples and the same number pieces of poster board. Paint each board, or a large section of the board, with a different color. Hold them in front of your door until you get the color that says, “This is it!”. We found it usually took us three tries to get the right color for the walls inside. Don’t give up if it takes awhile. Happy painting!

I want to paint my front door a bright color, but the problem is a security screen door. I’m wondering if I paint the door, will it even show?

    • Kathy Woodard says:

Depends of course on that security door and how much you can see through it etc…Or maybe consider whether you really need the screen door???

  3. Shelia Everhart says:

I have metal doors and I have painted one before but the paint didnt last, i know i didnt do something right? any suggestions?

  4. Sorry for this stupid question..does the front (or back) door get the same color both inside and out?

    • Kathy Woodard says:

Thats entirely up to you, I think most people just paint the outside of the door, and leave the interior door a more neutral color to blend with the interior of the home. Hope this helps!

  5. Brandie says:

I have a all red brick house. My front door is white. What color should I paint it?

    • Kathy Woodard says:

What style house? Color of trim?
Lots of possibilities depending on different things. Usually can’t go wrong with black though!

  6. I have a light gray house with a wedge wood blue trim and shutters. Do you think a yellow door would look good?

    • Kathy Woodard says:

Since the color of your house is pretty traditional, just don’t go too primary bright with the door and I think it will be a great color combo!

  7. Cindy PHillips says:

    Hi –

We are thinking of painting our front door. We have a light blue house with slightly darker blue shutters. Currently the door is black, the outside light fixtures are black and the mailbox is black.

What do you think about orange for the door? Any suggestions for what to do with the light fixtures and mailbox? Do you have any other bold color suggestions?

    Thanks-
    Cindy

    • Kathy Woodard says:

Personally, I think you could paint the door orange (across the color wheel from blue, so it will POP!) and not have to change another thing… it will be quite a re-fresh!If you want to go slightly more subtle, consider a coral shade… still bold, but might meld with the blue a little gentler… readers, ideas for Cindy?

  8. I WOULD LOVE TO SPRUCE UP MY FRONT DOOR. MY HOUSE HAS CREAM/YELLOW SIDING WITH HUNTER GREEN SHUTTERS. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON A COLOR THAT WOULD MATCH – AND POP OUT?

  9. lauren mccarthy says:

can the editors of this page help me find the round rug in the first photo? I’m trying to do my front porch exactly like this (orange door, round multibraided rug), and can’t find this exact rug anywhere. Does it exist?!

  10. We have a red brick home and our eaves troughs are the country blue that was popular in the 90s which I do not like now but have no intentions of changing. Not sure what colour to paint our steel door?

  11. If I ever have my own home again, I would have a FUCHSIA door!! I love pink, and that is one shade that makes me so very happy every time I see it! I’d want to have a cob house in cornflower blue with the whitest white trim I could possibly make it–but that front door would be the standout feature of the whole exterior, along with gorgeous flowers growing in pots on either side of it.

  12. I want to do something different with our front door. I have a brick ranch with navy shutters and navy door. I’m thinking yellow to coordinate with shutters? I’m not that great at picking colors. What do you think?
